"Mobilegeddon" and Your Career Site

"Mobilegeddon" and Your Career Site

A couple years ago, Google launched a "mobile-friendly” update. Often referred to as Mobilegeddon, this update was designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. And while it may be tempting to disregard these Google updates as minimal, ignoring them may mean changes in your organic traffic and rankings. Some websites reported 10-20 percent swing in organic traffic.

But that's just for the marketing and IT teams to care about, right?

In a recent blog post by Franz Gilbert, GPHR, the author addresses concern that Google is penalizing applicant tracking systems for two potential reasons: lack of mobile optimization and lack of quality content.

So, what’s an HR person to do?

First, get your site mobile optimized quickly. If you’re not sure if your career site will fit the bill in Google’s eyes, ask them. Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test Tool. This tool offers a Googlebot view as to how Google sees your page. If your site isn’t optimized for mobile and is being negatively impacted, this is where it will be apparent. Google will highlight things such as having too small of text, having links too close together, or not having a mobile view set.

If you think your ATS is doing the work for you, be sure to double check. Not all applicant tracking systems were created equal in the eyes of the Googlebot.

Second, your site may be penalized for lack of quality content and engagement problems on the site that may occur as a result. That means simply having a list of jobs may not be enough. Engage your job seekers with relevant content that will keep them on your site. Videos, photos, and deeper company information are all ways to enrich your site and the candidate experience.

Bottom line: If you're making your career site a great experience for candidates, Google will appreciate your efforts.
