Some time ago I reported on serious shortages in the nuclear industry in England:
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority will not succeed unless urgentmeasures are taken to retain skilled staff and encourage new entrantsto the industry, a leading union has warned.
Prospect, the union representing workers in the nuclear industry, said the authority’s strategy for the clean-up of historic nuclearfacilities would fail unless there were enough people with the right qualifications and experience to carry out the job.
Now comes word of even more shortages in Britains nuclear field:
Britain's ability to build an independent nuclear deterrent is being threatened by a "critical shortage" of skilled craftsmen to make submarines, MPs say in a report published today.
....the entire programme could be derailed by the "haemorrhaging" of essential skills from the shipbuilding industry, the committee warned.
"The skills base is now at a critical level," it said "Any further erosion of the workforce may have significant implications for the future of the submarine programme."
The MoD's shortage of systems engineers and project managers, skills essential at the start of a programme, was "a cause of serious concern".
