How to tell if an advice website really is doling out good advice? See what kind of advice it gives in an area you have some experience in.
SoYouWanna.com is a site that offers how to advice on a plethora of topics including job-hunting.
What do they have to say about the inevitable "what is your greatest weakness" question?
try to find something to say that isn't a real weakness, but a slightly less-than-ideal characteristic. For example:
"I prefer to see a project through from start to finish rather than working on a single component and never seeing the finished product. I sometimes find it a bit frustrating to work without that overall context."
"Sometimes I have a hard time saying no to people, and I end up taking on more than my share of work." If you really can't think of anything to say, you can always go with this time-tested (albeit clichéd) comeback: "I'm a perfectionist. I need to improve on not being so hard on myself and making sure I get everything right."
Ok, in one word: yuck.
You find it hard to say no to people? And that results in you taking on more work? So you want your future boss to think he/she can dump as much stuff on you as possible? Great, now you'll be the one complaining about being overworked and hating your boss three months from now.
Plus it is a flat out lie - not very many people I know have this as a weakness.
If you answer this way in an interview guess what my next question is to you?
Tell me about a time when you took on too much work. What was the situation. Why did you do it? How did you prioritize which work was more important. How did this effect your productivity? Once you realized it was a problem what did you do about it?
