Taking a job in Canada? Beware the invisible pay cut.

Americans who are offered a plum job here in Canada should take a couple of things into account when evaluating the compensation offered.

Most notably the cost of living is somewhat higher here as Career Journal notes (comparing Toronto to Florida) :

The cost of living is about 30% higher in Toronto, says Dennis G. Taylor, a global mobility consultant for Runzheimer International, a Rochester, Wis., relocation concern. Home-mortgage interest isn't tax deductible in Canada, Mr. Taylor says. Ontario levies a provincial tax, while Florida has no state income tax. Insurance rates on your car will double. And consumer prices are a couple of percentage points higher, Mr. Taylor says. Thus to afford the same quality of life in Toronto, you will need to be paid more.

Also both Ontario and the Federal Government levy sales taxes that total 14% of every thing you buy. Plus the Federal tax is a VAT tax on both goods AND services.

Not only that the weather is much nicer in Florida and they also have two hockey teams.

The article also points to a website called Payscale.com which can help you calculate what your new salary should be.

House prices are fairly steep in Toronto I think the median is around 300k but you won't get much for that.

Yes I agree. However, Florida is one of only a few states in the United States that do not have a state income tax. Moreover, while interest is not tax deductible in Toronto, what is the median house price? I'm sure it is far less than the median house price in Florida, namely South Florida.
