Starting a Recruiting Blog At ERE

Jim Durbin is on stage and he looks happy. I am never sure if his happiness comes from the fact that he is who he is or because he has a very understanding and lovely wife. Heather Hamilton from Microsoft, Dennis Smith from T- Mobile and Joe Grimm from the Detroit Free Press are also on the stage.

Jim is going to lead the panel and try to shed some light on the benefits of blogging. No one looks nervous and this is always a huge surprise to me. I am nervous just thinking about all of this. Jim, stop talking so fast. You are making me nervous.

1st question. How many blog posts should you write on a monthly basis? Heather says she posts three times a week. She is a believer that you should not post for the sake of posting but rather that do it when you have something to say

#2: what kinds of things should you talk about? The answer is that you should use Q and A to develop things of interest. Maybe have an RSS feed to give you ideas.

Jim says don’t write press releases. Jim says write about sales if that is what you are interested in. Try to start a community for people you want to write for and Heather says, her blog is about her. She made it seem like she was kidding and lots of people laughed but she is serious.

Heather says you should get into the minds of people you want to attract and then make sure you have keywords in your posts so the search engines will pick it up.

Lots of talk and the truth is blogs are good and if you have stuff to say you should say it. You should let your company know that you will be starting a blog and hopefully that conversation goes well. Of course if you don’t care about being fired you can by pass all of the above and just start doing your thing.

There are lots of people in the room now and it is almost the last session. There seems to be a real genuine interest here about blogs and I am not surprised by it. Dennis Smith gets lots of candidates because of his blog, Heather gets real benefit from her blog and Joe seems to really know what he is talking about with a strong belief in the value of blogs.

I hope the above makes sense. Sorry for the lack of proofreading. It's a blog

In response to Holly ...

When I started blogging, I went for a meaty question-and-answer at 7 a.m. and then smaller posts (often just links with an observation) at noon and, if I could manage it, at 3 p.m., seven days a week.

That felt like a lot to me.

With Poynter, they want to see just the Q&A, Monday through Friday. MUCH more manageable. A really good day with that feature is 8,000 views. April is on track for about 130,000.

I'm wondering what the other two said about the frequency of blogs?
