Request for Recruiter/Sourcer Expertise

Kay Kilgore from the Arkansas State Parks is asking for help. She needs to find a lodge manager for the new Mount Magazine location, but is unsure how to go about using social networking to help her find the position. The traditional methods have not worked - finding a lodge manager from newspaper postings and posting the job has not worked (and they have no way to hire a recruiter for the position).

So the question, knowledgeable readers, is how you would go about finding or sourcing a list of lodge managers who might have interest in working for the State of Arkansas. Please leave comments, or link from your blogs, and we'll add the information to this postin. Let's see what the recruiting community can do to find this very different position.

Hmm, I thought they were just asking for ideas? Isn't it amazing, a simple response can create so many interpretations as well as mis-interpretations?

Kay, I do hope that the suggestions help!

This is an excellent example of the "disconnect" that can happen on sourcing requests like these. As Steve just pointed out, it would've been a good idea for Kay to have told us what she did/what worked/didn't and what she could/could not do.

We were afforded the following information:
"The traditional methods have not worked - finding a lodge manager from newspaper postings and posting the job has not worked (and they have no way to hire a recruiter for the position)."

If, in fact, "direct" recruitment at the state level is "limited", I marvel at what appears to me as inefficiencies inherent in the government’s recruiting practices. Can anyone explain to me the reasoning behind such “limiting” logic?

I'm VERY interested in industries that MAY or DO have restrictions on direct recruiting. Can anyone shed light on which these are so I may avoid them (like the plague) in the future?

The following is a 3mb file and takes a while to load:

Enjoy!

Maureen, you're giving away my secrets. ;-)

Deez, Jim Durbin made the post, I don't know if Kay has been here yet.

Heck, between you and Maureen, everyone will be able to do my job. ;-)

Carl,
some industries have limitations that MAY prevent the ability of being able to directly recruit. It can be due to Agreements, Reputation, Union, Government affiliation or Regulation and of course other Concerns. (please note the Word MAY -before anyone decides to jump on my posts)

Anyways -- when I was a travel agent, quite often we would get free passes to visit many of these hotels, and of course developed relationships with the managers. You will find also that Vendors will also develop strong friendships with the management of these hotels or lodges.

As a recruiter, one thing that we often learn is that individuals will quite frequently reach out to their Trusted vendors and ask them to keep their eyes and ears open for new opportunities, and of course vice versa -

Networking is the best way to get or fill a job, isn't about 10 percent or there abouts?

Good luck Kay, glad to see that there were a lot of great ideas presented.

First off, Kay - would you please mind posting what you've already done to find this character? What has worked, what hasn't is very helpful.

Second, I'm sure everyone reading this thread clicked on the link and read a bit about the park and the lodge. Right?

Third, I'm sure you went right to the Arkansas Hospitality Association (http://www.arhospitality.org/) or all other related hospitality association (spas) or Cornell, UMass, Niagra, Delaware, etc. - as someone noted, where the schools of hotel management lie.

etc.

Surely Ms Kilgore knows of some national ranking/listing of state lodges? She could start with the states surrounding Arkansas, (TN, MS, TX, OK, MO and LA all touch the borders of Arkansas) and call the lodges in those states and say:

“Can you please tell me who your Lodge Manager is?”

Once they tell you, say, “Can you please give me her/his direct dial or extension number?”

Once they give this to you, (or don’t) ask to be transferred to that person.

Once there, offer that person the opportunity.

This doesn't have to be complicated.

http://www.nps.gov/parks.html
The above link will take you to the Parks and Recreation Guide of the National Park Service. You can search by name, geographic location and topic. Many if these parks will have lodges. Follow the contact instructions listed above.

http://home.nps.gov/applications/parksearch/geosearch.cfm
Here you can search for parks by state. The links give you all their yadda yadda including their contact info.

Example:
Here’s a state I found that listed their state lodges using the google two search terms: "state lodges” list
Washington State Lodge Guide:
http://www.washingtonstate.worldweb.com/WheretoStay/Lodges/
Lodges are listed, call each one and find out who the Lodge Manager is. Offer the Lodge Manager the opportunity and/or ask him/her if he/she knows of anyone "looking".

That's what I'd do if I did full cycle recruiting, which I don't.

Hmmmm, very different position?!?!?! Sounds like one that we would be hired to do. I'd call some folks, but hey, that's just me. ;-)

Have Kay look up the industry trade magazines. Review the articles that quote a number of individuals. Contact many of the authors who wrote the Articles and explain her predicament and ask them to pass the word on

Contact the Advertising Agencies that promote many of the Lodging industry. These can also be found on the websites. Again explaining the predicaments and asking if they know of anyone who may be looking.

Of course contacting the local travel agencies, Travel Bureaus, Convention Centers – Especially The travel agencies - they will be aware of who many of the Managers are.. Many of the Managers do reach out to the travel agencies to push their Lodges, even inviting them to Visit for free.

Reaching out to the Construction Managers, facility managers and maintenance Companies and orgs. They all are in constant communication with these managers.

Of course not let’s not forget food and beverage, restaurant, linens, and all the supplier vendors who deal with management on a daily basis. Many of these companies will be national, and they all know of someone who says – “if you know someone, please send them my direction”

Finally, Contact the Schools and colleges who deal with hotel management. Again, they are often contacted by the alumni, who want to keep their ears and eyes open for them.

Hope this helps..
