Facebook Recruiting Webinar With The Social Media Headhunter

This is a paid webinar. It's $89 per person, but video playback will be available to you, to help you refresh your memory and to make sure you get the full value.

Publicity of course is welcome. If you have a blog or website, and link to the webinar, I'll be happy to return the favor with link from one of my PR5 websites. This is the first in the Social Media Headhunter Series, as we learn to use social networking services to make more placements and hire more people.

The webinar registration. More at StlRecruiting.com

The initial response to Bill's new weekly feature has been fantastic. There have been 400 or so new members joining the XtremeRecruiting.tv group with a solid response to last week's video and question. Remember, to participate in this interactve session, and have a shot at winning Bill's audio book 'Big Biller'on a top-of-the-line iPod, you must be a member of the Xtremerecruiting.tv group.

Mendoza’s Monday Member Showcase

Today Dave introduces us to Jocelyn Donegan. Jocelyn has recently made the everyday transition form Hollywood actress and TV celeb to, um, recruiter! Jocelyn is a Managing Partner C4 Consulting & Recruiting and says of herself:

"I'm a storyteller, wearing multiple hats in many mediums, because I believe that stories remind us all to go beyond what we feel is possible."

'If time is the constraint, how can you analyze a candidate’s level of commitment? I work mostly on corporate-to-corporate contract positions (temporary placements), and I need to submit the resume to the preferred vendor or client within a couple of hours of the requisition opening. How can I avoid vanishing candidates?'

Read Claudia's reply on RecruitingBlogs.com...

Some of us had the pleasure of John Sumser's company in Ft. Lauderdale yesterday. We spent time together at the BROWN BAG RECRUITER training in the morning and then had lunch together. We rounded out the day networking with 12 disciples breaking bread at the South Florida Metro Recruiters inaugural shindig which was hosted in absentia by Jason Davis [aka Slouch] and RecruitingBlogs.com.

As I write, it’s beginning to look like Jobster will terminate my editorial responsibilities on Wednesday the 9th. It’s certainly their opion to change horses when and where they see fit. They’ve just done it awkwardly.
Status Report.1

So, I am sitting in the heart of Boston's beautiful Logan Airport. My table at the Dunkin Donuts (this is really a long way from California) is strategically chosen. I can charge the cell phone and the laptop with only a modest bit of embarrassment.

I'm here at the start of the next phase of things. The red eye dropped me here for 7 hours before I wing it to Toronto to meet with Jason Davis for a day. While I'm here, I get to spend a couple of hours with a very old friend. I also get to do the Recruiting Animal show (in the Recruitingblogs.com version. Calling in from Logan!!!

Things have really changed for me over the last 120 days.

In December, I lost my day job at interbiznet.com, the company I founded back in 1994. Divorce, a change in management philosophy and a desire to really try some new things conspired to be my Shawshank Redemption. After crawling through 500 yards of sewage, I emerged in the creek. Free and focused, I've been in the most amazing renewal.

It gets better.

My year long gig as the purported editor at Recruiting.com is coming to a close. On May 10th, my contract expires. Jobster says they will be taking over the management of the site. You will see my work transition to the newly energized JohnSumser.com (not quite finished but workable). The Recruiting Roadshow™ has a full head of steam (new website coming momentarily)

John Sumser .-. ©2008 Two Color Hat, Inc.
Harvesting Diversity

I am hopeful that Obama's speech on race issues will be remembered as the start of something new. For a generation, the United States has used regulation and coercion to try to solve a serious problem. Equal citizenship under the law required serious arm twisting including penalties and quotas. In order to teach a new and better way of doing things, the government intervened.

The combination of 40 years of regulation and the march of demographics delivers us to a new starting point. Fully 33% of the under 40 set (Gens X and Y) consider themselves to be of mixed race. There is some evidence that regulation allowed the glass ceiling to be moved up a couple of inches.

It's hard for me to imagine how any thinking white American adult would have a problem owning the remnants of racism in their position. The remnants of our history are rapidly evolving away from discrimination based on skin tone. They are evolving towards discrimination based on social class. Listen closely to the way that people who dreamed of home ownership for their families are being blamed for the sub-prime problem.

There's more than a little overlap between the two.

The ongoing demographic shifts (labor shortage, aging of the population and so on) make it clear that our problem is how to harness the resources that we have. Discrimination based on anything other than performance comes at the cost of organizational effectiveness. Shortage and right sizing conspire to make us all stewards of scarce human resources.

Over the past twenty years, the diversity drumbeat has been persistent and intensifying. On many levels (there's still work to be done), the physical problems are resolving themselves. What hasn't been addressed by regulation will be addressed by time.

Our job is to harvest the bounty we've been given.

It's weird to say this. When I speak to groups of recruiters, it's clear that the gatekeepers of our organizations are significantly whiter than the population. Even so, the problem is harvesting, not planting.

To be less obtuse, the problem has shifted from being a question of numbers to being a question of attitudes. We're closing on on the numerical problem. Diversity is, at the root, about strength that comes from differing viewpoints. Getting a little more honest about the racism in our culture helps open that door to productivity.
