SEO Blogging Tip

Here's a liittle known search engine trick to get traffic. Incorporate people, places and things that have been in the news recently. It works especially well for people in the news. One example I can refer to is my recent post When recruiters go bad.

In that post I wrote about a woman Kathryn Clark Melanson, a recruiter who was in the news for stealing some money. That post got me several visitors in the days that followed. Since people had seen her on the news and in the newspaper, they began googling her. In fact my post is now #3 on the first page of Google results for " kathryn clark melanson".

I also wrote a post on SOTHJ about the Fort McMurray, Canada job market which is booming due to oilsands production. This post alone has resulted in almost 1,000 visitors to that blog. All I did was watch a piece on 60 minutes and then blogged about it the next day. Instant traffic followed.

I think it is absolutely awful that you would take time to blog about a woman's unfortunate mishap. Do you know the whole story? Did this happen to you? When companies do background checks, they will learn of the truth. I think you're an awful, terrible, insesitive person to have the moral to post such a blog. It's obvious that you take pleasure in humililating people. You know what they say about karma. Oh, I guess you don't!

Oh and I suppose the newspaper article that came out is also insensitive? How about the television news story?

Be real here, there was nothing 'unfortunate' about her 'mishap'. She stole like $95,000 and lied about it on her taxes. I wasn't judging her, I simply reported on an existing story.

Back to the point, which is that this is an excellent SEO tip. I try to tie my posts on Water Cooler Wisdom into news anyway, but this gives me an added incentive. Thanks, Chris!

Excellent tip! I did that last year when blogged about Terri Schiavo and Hurricane Katrina. They drew a lot of traffic to my website back then.

Great tip. I have seen this as well in my post, 'Google Changes Hiring Process'.

The Wall Street Journal wrote about Laszlo Bock's efforts to change Google's hiring process. I summerized the article. Now people searching on his name are finding their way to my Blog.

Ironically I am not visible on Yahoo! but am #6 on Google.
