Buying Domain Names: Don't Get Robbed

-Jim Durbin

One of the smartest moves in blogging is buying your own domain name.  Recruiting.com benefitted from a great url, and so has Harry Joiner, of Marketing Headhunter fame.

But when you're looking, you need to be aware of something.  If you find a domain name is available and think you may ever want it  - buy it.  Buy it Right Now.

I've personally had this happen several times - but new information is out that people are monitoring your search for domain names, and buying them up before you return to purchase.

A security writer at eWeek has the whole sordid story.

This has happened to me on several occasions. Very irritating. As a result, I always shoot first and ask questions later -- which has caused me to buy several domains that I might not have bought had I slept on the matter. But the alternative is to lose a domain on which I might want to build a legitimate site.
