Spam, I Am (not)

Now not everyone has a fax machine so David has a helpful solution - use the many great Internet fax services out there like eFax and FaxAway or David's personal favorite: Myfax.com.

Or you could just buy a cheap fax modem and slap it in your computer. If you're a Vonage business user like me you get a free fax line.

It's an interesting idea but here's the problem in my opinion. Any fax that can be sent via an Internet service can be routed to someones email box and quite a few companies do that.

So is it just a lot work that ends up with the same result? Or does an email-fax somehow avoid the dreaded spam filter?

Perhaps some of our readers could provide some context on this?

If you're going to use internet Fax you need to fax it to a land-line. Obviously that wasn't clear in the article in Job Journal. When you use internet fax to go to a real machine it's not deleted. The nice theing about MyFax is that you can do that.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Back in 2002 I was hiring some techies and was getting swamped. After the secretary brought me the fourth faxed resume, I told her to stop bringing them to me, and to contact the sender to have them email a copy to me. But the first three did get a look-see, they just weren't any different/better than the hundreds HotJobs was feeding me.

Yeah, a faxed resume is a change in pace from the other fax spam (spax?), but the quality of the presentation usually suffers.

If you want it to stand out, send it by snail mail on a heavy bond paper that suggests quality. Of course it only really matters if what is ON your resume is worth reading.

Just Curious, based upon what I read recently it seems okay to send jobs to Candidates as a fax or e-mail as long as we are Not charging a fee, but isn't sending resumes to clients that aren't clients then not selling a service?

Is it possible that this may go against the Do Not fax rules??

But then again are we really selling a service or Not since we charge the client the fee?

Dave P's comment that "the nice thing" about MyFax is that you can send you a fax to a land line is a moot point. MyFax, EFax, or any fax software that exists can "do that."

The business development agreement that Perry-Martel must have with Protus IP Solutions, the makers of MyFax (and Perry's neighbor business up there in Ottawa) must be sweet. Of course, Protus is the second largest sender of junk faxes in the USA currently and is being sued for sending millions of unsolicited faxes.

Hiring managers may be responsive until they get their hand slapped for accepting "unsolicted" resumes, which [unforunately] for the job seeker is HR's standard approach.

MyFAx, EFAx and a host of other services will do a great job in getting the resume on the hiring managers desk.

Careercowboy - hiring manager's don't get their wrists slapped for receiving unsolicited resumes from job hunters. They do if they accept them from 3rd party recruiters - which is a diferent stroy.

For Rcruiters trying to place or market candidates I'm not certian of the value. I hand deliver the profiles of the candidates I'm recruiting for a client.

That article in Job Journal is aimed at job-hunters specifically and is an abreviated piece from the book Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters [Wiley 2005]of which I ma co-author.

Protus is a client for sure. I worked with the executive team when to hire a new VP Sales for them. I was also researching the book at the time.

I was and still am so impressed with their service I solicited a contribution for the book from the President. By that time I had already finshed hiring their VP Sales - who has subsequently doubled thier revenues.

The deal on our web site www.gm4jh.com is for a month of FREE service. FREE means no cost Career Cowboy - gratuis. Even you can sign up.

I simply dont think the fax your resume strategy has legs. Although it is a strategy. That said, I will test it with a group of job hunters I am working with in my spare time and report via a post to recruiting.com

Also, let me be fair to you [David]. I finished your book last night. It is much different than the other job hunting books I have read. It actually had strategies and tactics.

And sorry about the "anonymous" post. My name is Rob Humphrey. I will update my Typepad profile for the future.

Rob - nice to make your acquaintance and thanks for the compliment on the book. As you know from reading the book I'm a proponent of the direct approach - I detest email [though it can be used well] and I'm not a huge fan of the old fashioned networking promoted by most of the books on the market [though it has its place]. There are many tools that work – if put in the right hands

Fax is a tool that is far better in my opinion than the email scam that runs something like this: "put your resume on every recruiter in the world's desk top through their email because one of the 20,000,000 recruiters out there has to have a job that's perfect for you --- for only $99 dollars". Thousands of people spend their money everyday on this and their resume goes where? You just don’t know because they don’t give you a list you can follow up to see if it was actually received anywhere. With MyFax you choose where it’s going and you keep the list so you can follow it up.

As you know only too well, finding a job is bloody lot of work and there aren't many short cuts and there are no silver bullets. You can be smart about it and you can leverage technology but yo need a mutlipronged plan of attack – using many tools/weapons to succeed. All too though people are looking for the quick fix because they need a job NOW! As I‘ve said for years most people spend more time planning their honeymoon than working on their marriage – with predictable results. Forethought is usually an after thought.

Jay and I tried our darndest to give job-hunters the biggest arsenal we could with instructions on how and when to use each and every tool/weapon. It’s up to date and terribly pragmatic and it works.

The million dollar question every job hunter has to ask - and answer - is how can I get employers to CALL ME and ask me to interview for their position? How can I remain on the radar of the choicest employers?

In essence we've tried to write a guide that solves a person's immediate need and helps them position themselves for the future.

Rob, I look forward to all your feedback. Let me know what’s working for your clients and where they’re stuck.

All the best.
