SEO Stuff and HR Marketer

MarketingIn the last week I have had a couple of great conversations with Mark Willaman who runs a company called HR Marketer.  He also has a blog which is located here.

Today he has a great post on SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Mark took me on a test drive of the HR Marketer system and it is great. For anyone who has products or services that they are selling into the HR marketplace, you need to demo this.

It is amazing how much they have databased and how much information is available. I am sure that if you contact mark, he will be more than happy to show you the system.

I did a search on google in order to find out what people have said about HR Marketer.  Here are the search results

It is a good one.

While I agree with Mark's fundamentals on SEO, I think he has trivialized the process.

I can teach someone how to guard LeBron James. However, actually doing so is a bit more difficult.

This is good advice, but to implement correctly, especially keeping an eye on the numbers/stats/metrics and managing the off-site links/trades, will be an ongoing chore and fulltime job. There's a lot of ongoing research involved too. Also what he said about content can become an entire project in itself, that said, what do you think I'm doing here? :)

What he said about the CGI links is true, however there's a big tradeoff... Your site will lose functionality for the sake of a few older search engines that can't follow CGI links--as time moves on most search engines will reckon with the CGI.

Thinking like a search engine can only get you so far though--the bottom line is that people are smarter than search engines--word of mouth is still #1. I didn't need a search engine to find this blog.

We do not mean to trivialize SEO. It is a very complex topic and every company should invest something in it. However, there are some very basic things you can do (that don't necesarily require a formal SEO engagement) to improve your site rankings and that was the intended point of our posting. Our own site is proof. Three months after implementing our own advice on our HRmarketer.com site, our SEO improved dramatically. In fact, for our top keyword phrases, we now rank in the top five results on Google and Yahoo!.
