Jesse Stay, an in-demand IT guy, rants about getting an impersonal e-mail from a recruiter (I got the same one). Is it time to get more personal, and try and develop relationships with individuals?
Or is that just too much work?

Rob, that's the thing though - you know me! You have initiated the effort to know me, have gone to events and tried to truly be my friend. You are on all the local development mailing lists, and the people on those lists consider you a friend, not someone who just wants their commission money. As a recruiter, I believe you truly are interested in me. Letters like the one I mentioned have no sense of showing that interest. It is true, my blog doesn't say if I'm looking or not - that is on purpose, as I feel anyone can be bought. ;-) However, I would be much nicer in my responses to these recruiters, and maybe even refer some of my friends, or even blog about their jobs, if they approach me with a little information about something I've blogged about, something I've shown an interest in, or mostly they have shown that in some way they actually care. I know they need to feed their families, but I promise, and you're an expert at this Rob (more people need to learn what Rob does), you'll be much more successful with a more personalized message than a bulk e-mail. Jason, of course it's time to "get more personal" but HOW? When you can't feed your kids or pay your mortgage because you don't have enough candidates for your client, guess what happens? When you have impatient clients and deadline-focused managers breathing down your neck, and one prima-donna programmer puts a little sticky-note on his blog giving me additional barriers to entry in contacting him... I am going to IGNORE that. Do you want a job or not? Are you looking? Jesse's post still didn't say one way or the other! What am I supposed to do with that information other than "google him" :) [Full-disclosure: I know Jesse and Jason both very well... just stirring the pot!] |
