Introducing Mr. John Sumser As The New Editor Of Recruiting.com

Yesterday afternoon I found out that none other than John Sumser will become the new editor of Recruiting.com. Wow! He’s a big name guy. He’s a smart guy and I know that when he commits himself to do something, he does it and does his best.

I spoke to John this morning and asked him some questions and essentially this is what I got from him.

He is being hired as the new editor for Recruiting.com and he will use his powers to help pull together some strong voices and ideas. I don’t believe that the initial plan is to drastically change Recruiting.com but over time, John’s flavor of what is interesting will help shape the blog.

John has had tremendous influence on my involvement in the recruiting industry. He initially put the idea in my head that blogging could be a great thing. He was right. I have been visiting his site daily for 10 years now and I have referenced his articles countless of times. John has been watching Recruiting.com as an outsider very closely for the last 3 years and it sure must be an interesting thing now for him to be stepping on in. I look forward to watching.

There will be more about this shortly.

I called the Recruiting Animal to let him know what was going on. Below is our conversation:

JayDee: Hey, did you hear? Sumser's taking over Recruiting.com
Animal: No.
JayDee: Yeah.
Animal: No
JayDee: Yeah.
Animal: No.
JayDee: Shut up!!!
Animal: No, really?
JayDee: Yeah.
Animal: How much are they paying him?
JayDee: I don't know.
Animal: Come on.
JayDee: I don't know
Animal: Come on.
JayDee: I don't know.
Animal: It's me!
JayDee: I DON'T KNOW!
Animal: What are his plans?
JayDee: You know I can't tell you that.

Congratultaions to jobster and Jason Goldberg on a great and timely choice! Thought and opinion leadership are not for the faint of heart.

Our friend John Sumser has the heart of a lion and a steel trap mind to match. The next year or so should provide some great ideas and fascinating reading.

Amitai - I'm not expecting a reply from John here.
Seriously. I doubt think he even knows these comments exist.

Hello, Chan Chi Sing: You raise some interesting points some which beg a debate and the others an answer. I'll go for the latter, keeping my powder dry for an upcoming post....

John Sumser's post - or is an article by default - New Order has been submitted here on Recruiting.com. So, even though you cannot engage interbiznet's readership in a conversation, you can certainly start one in this space.

Perhaps John will answer you here, or there. Will you, John?

I'm a new guy here, I realize Mr. Sumser is an old timer and well regarded but can someone pls tell me:

What is interbiznet.com ? seriously, what is it? for a first timer visiting it looks like a 90's circa, closed comment, private posting forum. The closed comment thing bugs me. In this age of blogging, collaborating and interacting, I think a successful publisher needs to engage, provoke and encourage feedback from readers. I just read this: http://www.interbiznet.com/hrstart.html and it provoked a number of strong responses from me, but unfortunately there seems to be no way to comment on it.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong and just missed it, but does Mr. Sumser really write about the recruiting industry daily and in this day and age (2007) no allow any comments?

To me, this projects a very autocratic, old school attitude
and a strange match to a site like this which appears to have its roots firmly planted in a democratic spirit.

Martin, I think it is more like GM and Yugo... in that order... at least now.

There have been rumblings that the place has gone a little stale- that "John is a smart guy" is a trusim. Dave Mendoza is unhappy about it, not without some reason, but I think John has earned the spot with his body of work and deserves a chance to try the role on for size.

I think the most interesting new dynamic here is not between Jason G. and John, but between John and Dave Manaster, now that John has a pretty strong platform to build around. I consider ERE and Recruiting.com to be the Ford and Chevy of the space- or for you youngins, the Toyota and Honda.....

Good times!

Ami, I read that as well. I don't think it will be long before Jason G. doesn't control the purse strings of Jobster. His post not long ago about the "value" of recruiting.com put Animal and I on the same wavelength...

Shortly thereafter the other shoe dropped when Jason posted his "T minus 37" announcement.

Now we have another announcement, this time about John being made Executive Editor. John, who knows something about using the Internet to make money (see his rate card on his Internetbiz site http://www.interbiznet.com/ern/mediakit/,) has probably already figured out that JGo was testing the waters with his comment and I'll wager that John sees "gold in them there hills" with regard to the value of the site.

Carl - I cannot comment on your prophetic powers but see here, where John says:

"Jason Goldberg has been generous enough to continue his investment in Recruiting.com. It's not likely to ever be a central component of the company's product line. Rather, it's Jobster's endowment to the Recruiting community."

Ami... I read the article. He expalins how he will operate, he doesn't tell how things came about or what the long term goal is. I stand by my prediction.

I hope I don't need to find a new outlet to vent my frustrations - RDC is the only thing keeping me sane some days! Seriously though, I think that having John as the editor of Recruiting.com will be a great thing and I look forward to seeing what his plans for the future are.

Fri, 04/06/2007 - 1:26pm

Carl - you should read John's post of today where he explains it from a reasoned perspective: New Order

Fri, 04/06/2007 - 1:09pm

Could someone please explain to me why Jobster has recruiting.com?

Is the Jobster product suited for recruiters? Are they marketing their services to us? Is their something that Jobster benefits by having a connection to recruiters with the blog?

My guess... John is test driving the site before purchasing it. You heard it here first folks.

John Sumser taking the reins at Recruiting.com says more about what Jason Davis has built than how obvious John Sumser's role was in influencing this place prior to and now moving forward. Unlike some real-life soap operas, we don't a paternity test, do we?

Recruiting.com has always been the center of gravity for recruiting bloggers. So that it should now revolve around an equally powerful force in John Sumser should have come as no surprise to even casual observers, readers of the posts.

Animal: As usual, you credit me for more than I deserve, confusing my wishful thinking for predictive powers.

Chad: "Heightened sense of situational awareness?" What are you smoking and where can I get some?

John: What is to become of interbiznet? Is it true Jason Davis has called in his marker and wants the interbiznet URL back? Or is he selling it on your behalf?

Jobster: Once again you defy the crowd - or is it the market - with the timing of a single intelligent move. Let's hope this is a step forward in recognizing the emotional attachment your consumers have for this brand and that that transcends your proprietary stake in it. If you ever want to be accepted as synonymous with this community of recruiters - elevating both brands in the process - this consumer at least hopes you will support John Sumser's leadership more than it appeared you did Jason Davis's.

This the single best piece of good news in a long while. I shall take the rest of the day off. Indeed, it is Good Friday!

What a different place this will be.

And, oh yes. Congratulations, Papa. What's going to become of the Bert and Ernie?

Fri, 04/06/2007 - 3:48am

I have to salute Ami G. He told me yesterday that this was a real possibility. I didn't see it. I thought The Chad's suggestion that it might be in the works was a mere taunt against one of Papa's postings.

New school meets old school. This should be fun.
