I Don't Like Surprises  -  view/add comments

In general, I don't like surprises. I don't like to wait until Christmas morning to open my presents, I don't like the impeding feeling that on my birthday someone is going to lead me into a dark room only to have a bunch of people waiting to yell 'SURPRISE!' before my eyes have had a chance to adjust, and I certainly don't like drive bys.

An Honest Commentary  -  view/add comments

I usually talk about the good companies out there, the employers that value their employees, the ones that actually care. Not today. To every yin there is a yang. To every light there is a dark. As I am feeling slightly dark today, let’s explore the road less traveled.

Going to great lengths  -  view/add comments

The Recruiting Animal and I were trading stories this week of the lengths some candidates will go to, just to get their resume seen by a company. So, to start a new series on Recruiting.com, I thought I'd post a few of the more memorable candidate stunts I have had pulled on me.

Hurry Up and Wait.  -  view/add comments

The "Hurry Up and Wait" scenario is one known well by recruiters - to internal and 3rd party alike. Why is this phenomenon so prevelent in our industry of all industries?

Is it that we are dealing with human capital? Is it because our clients are afraid to pull the trigger on a hire because it would be affecting another human person's life and welfare?

Cyber-Paranoia  -  view/add comments

With a new online world available to the masses, defamation and backstabbing takes on a whole new meaning.

There are no real rules yet surrounding Web 2.0. The world is able to submit content at will, regardless of whether or not it is defamatory in nature, truth or lies, fact or fiction (and in some cases blurring the lines of both.)

Ragan Jones likens recruiting to almost puking and loving it!

the thought of being a mile high (or so it seemed) and plummeting to the ground at speeds too insane for human comprehension, was both thrilling and terrifying to me at the same time. Who would have thought that I would choose a career that makes me feel the same way?

There have been many discussions on this blog regarding the best way to contact and recruit candidates. In one corner, the ColdCallers. In the other, the Emailers.

I am here to put a stake in the ground and go on record as saying, we are both wrong!

Yes, you heard me, both W-R-O-N-G.

In Your Backyard.  -  view/add comments

So, what happens when a direct competitor decides to open up a local office in your backyard? As I see it, a couple of different things can happen:

First, (as human nature would predict - the negative) a mad panic could hit. "Are they going to try and steal our people? Oh, god, this is going to make it even harder to find talent!"

Second, (a rational way to see a silver lining) it brings more talent to the local market - especially if your market has a low cost-of-living and cost-of-doing-business. Because there are more highly visible organizations like yours for people to work for, your market becomes a mecca for the high-level talent.

Thirdly, (the Type A personality in me) it promotes a raising-the-bar effect. Competition creates a need to be better, faster and more nimble - to in essence - beat the competition to the punch. This not only effects hiring and talent but getting and keeping business as well.

So, although, a major competitor moving into your backyard may give immediate cause for panic - it could be the defining moment of your organization.

Yes! A list! Come to Mamma!  -  view/add comments

by Ragan

As recruiters, I think we'd all agree that the best thing since Christmas morning in our business is running across a company's employee list. The thrill of seeing a list of potential candidates in front of our very eyes, wrapped up in a bow, is just about the best thing a recruiter can imagine, yes? I remember getting my hands on an employee directory that was 10 pages long and just sitting and staring at it for quite a long time, completely astounded that it was actually in my hands.

Well, my greatest wish is also now my worst nightmare.

Frosted Flakes  -  view/add comments

By Ragan

Flaky people bother me. Have an ounce of conviction people! I simply don't understand people that cannot commit to something after they have had days, even weeks to contemplate their decision.

You either want the job or you don't. The same way you either want to marry your boyfriend/girlfriend or you don't. There is no maybe. It is either yes or no.

What's so complicated about that?
