(February 20, 2008) During the past month, I spent a number of hours with the development team at Authoria. The Talent Management company owns the software formerly known as Hire.com. I have followed the development of the package since its early inception. It just keeps getting better.
The thing that separated Hire.com from its competition was its consistent emphasis on tactical recruiting. The system winnowed the flow of resumes and talent while allowing hiring authorities to interact with candidates while they were in the process of considering a job. The focus of the system was to deliver employment branding while executing great internal recruiting workflow. Those values have been maintained.
You may know that Authoria won the "Talent Management shootout" at last year's HR Tech Conference.
“An effective talent-management strategy has to include the integration of recruiting and performance management, so all the information gathered about new employees during recruiting is not lost to the organization, as it is right now,” said Bill Kutik, co-chair of the conference, . “We challenged the participants in this year’s Shootout to bridge the gulf between these two critical talent-management functions. Authoria deserves to be congratulated as the clear choice of our audience of HR executives and professionals.”
The sea of Talent Management voices, from SuccessFactors to Vurv, from Taleo to Talent Management Magazine describe different realities depending on their perspective. Talent management can include training, performance management, recruiting, retention, succession planning, compensation management and a host of other pieces of functionality. At the HR Tech "Shootout", there is an ever evolving standard of functionality. Authoria has kept meeting the bar as the conference team has moved it. Winning the shootout requires an enormous amount of flexibility form the management team.
Most of the industry standard Applicant Tracking Systems providers (and there are a ton of them at the Enterprise level of the game) are repositioning themselves as "Talent Management Systems" providers. That's how it goes in a buzzword ecology. One company gets a good idea and the rest of the flock adopts the language. The actual functionality of each system varies widely.
"Talent Management" has been through the spin-mill and is now a nearly meaningless idea. While Authoria play strongly in that field, the most interesting thing about Authoria is its user interface. Its underlying concept of clearly specified choice delivered to the actual decision makers is powerful. Its focus on the development of usable candidate relationships is exceptional. But, their user interface is really revolutionary.
Authoria uses what they call an "Actionable Organization Chart" to help hiring managers visualize the basic tasks of growing their Human Capital stock. The day to day user interface with the Authoria system begins with an org chart, complete with photos, titles, contact info, job description and so on. Each box in the chart has a drop down for tasks like requisition creation and candidate evaluation. The system cycles through ATS functionality always returning to the real world..the organization.
Authoria continues to provide the industry with its most interesting stream of innovation. As ATS become increasingly like a black box used for defensive and legal purposes, a new generation of Recruiting tool is about to emerge. Authoria points the way.
