Interview with a blogger - Andrew Gordon

A while back I was doing an "interview with a blogger" each Friday.  The people I have been featuring are all on our UK Recruitment Blog Watch page.  I've pretty much covered 80% of the bloggers so am trying to chase up the final (hard to reach in some cases!) few.  So if you've favourite blogger hasn't been featured here please feel free to give them a prod on my behalf.

Connected Jobs - Facebook Application for Recruiters

Panlogic is a strategic UK digital marketing agency with a specialism in social media. They are creating a Facebook application for recruiters (corporates and agencies) "to ease the chronic skills shortage in our industry and to improve the process of employees and employers finding each other by using the power of the Facebook platform".

The branded video signature - for recruiters

What about this as a way to promote vacancies at your organisation.  You get your CEO or Head of HR to do a piece to camera about how fantastic your company is - for the purpose of showcasing to candidates.  You pop a link to the video creative on your email, company literature, wherever you can.  On this link you'll see Jeremy Kay, MD of now|email, walk onto his website! If you click on the rotating stills behind him you'll be able to see what he and his company have done for the likes of Unilever and Future Publishing.

Obviously the more creative and well-drawn the company profile, the better an impression it gives and the more it helps the company to recruit better candidates.  It's a  brand new concept  so now | email  would like to spread the word to as many cutting-edge recruiters as possible.  Contact Jeremy  at jeremy.kay@nowemail.net and it could be your funky new sig I'm previewing here!

 Is Employment Law ever amusing?

Sprecher Grier Halberstam (great name for a firm of solicitors in my mind) sent me a note about their "weekly legal update".  As we already have a regular legal feature in the newsletter (see last week's issue for April's update) I thought I'd mention them here.  The weekly update is written by one of their employment solicitors and described as "informative yet humorous".  And, do you know what, they are!

How you might be classified on a PSL

In my recent conversation with Emma at Sky we talked about their current recruitment PSL review.  They have a large number of companies on their PSL as it hasn’t been fully reviewed in years and they want to streamline it

 Free Candidate Generation Strategies Webinar

Mark Whitby is running a free webinar on the subject of Candidate Generation on Wednesday 7th May at 10.00am BST.  The cost of his webinars is normally £47 per person.  We reviewed one of Mark's old style telephone training sessions a while back in the newsletter and got very good feedback.  So, if yours is a candidate driven market it's worth finding time for this 45 minute session.

You will learn:
* Free and low-cost sources of high calibre candidates
* A formula for generating at least 2 referrals from every candidate who registers
* Unorthodox but highly effective tactics for finding "immediately placeable" candidates
* Great alternatives to traditional advertising

Dave Mendoza on “Social Media: How is Technology Impacting Recruitment?”

Dave Mendoza (Master CyberSleuth Consultant) asked me if I'd do him a favor and post this panel discussion clip on my blog.  Seeing as he gave me the brilliant idea for my LinkedIn Group how could I refuse.

 Shoddy (and lazy) recruitment practices

I was chatting with a recruiter (who I'm calling Stuart) the other day who said he'd recently had a couple of instances of recruiters, from another agency, phoning up pretending to be a candidate in order to get names of companies who have live vacancies.  Stuart asked the recruiter (who at that stage he thought was a jobseeker) to send over his CV so they could talk about suitable opportunities.  The chap must have just picked up a CV from his inbox and sent it over after changing the name and current job.  Sadly for him, Jason recognised that the rest of the CV was from one of their current candidates!

Onrec Online Recruitment Conference & Exhibition

This year's Onrec conference takes place on Tuesday 3rd June at The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster, London.

The agenda includes presentations from the Head of HR at O2, Felix Wetzel of The Jobsite Group and a "Senior Inventor" from IBM talking about Virtual Worlds and Online Recruitment.  Laura Stoker of AIRS will be presenting on "Finding passive candidates" (this will be a nice overview to their two day course I'm attending on the 4th and 5th June).  I also notice that Matt Alder is chairing the panel discussion at the end (that should stop me sloping off early).

Gareth Osborne gets out his soapbox

I'd noticed that Colin Minto had gone a bit quiet on his Borto blog.  For me this is a good thing as it means he is (probably) spending time focussing on my Jobboard (we use his company's technology).  However, I do miss his writings.

However, it's great to see that Gareth Osborne has taken up the mantle and so far posted seven times this month.  Gareth, as ex-Chair of the REC has some pretty strong opinions on the recruitment market so it'll be interesting to see what he talks about.  His two most recent ones are Worst nightmare possible for Recruiters (news that the PM has been in 'secret' discussions with the EC to find a solution to the 'Agency Workers Directive') and Developing a Second String (why you should encourage your staff to develop a second area of expertise).

Gareth assures me there is more to follow and Colin promises that he'll be back to blogging soon.

Sales Terminology - It’s like putting a carrot in front of a donkey

David Somerville is a secret blogger.  He writes for the internal blog at the parent company of Simply Online Services.  When we were last chatting he was telling me about a blog post he was putting together and kindly offered to share it to the world at large, via my blog.

Any UK Big Billers out there?

I had a note from Bill Vick (via Twitter) the other day saying that he has relaunched XtremeRecruiting as a Videocasting Web site and that he is looking for super star recruiters or technologists to interview via Skype video.

He would love to chat with some of the people who for the "UK Recruiter Community" so I said I'd pass the word around.

If you are interested get in touch with Bill direct, leave a comment here or drop me an email.  Let's help Bill give the recruiting leaders in the UK  more exposure.

 comScore's & Hitwise's Top 10 Job Sites

Each week in the ukrecruiter newsletter we publish the Hitwise's top 10 most visited UK recruitment sites.

Once a month we now get the equivalent stats from ComScore.  The plan is for us to publish them regularly on this blog (with a link from the newsletter).  Below are March's figures.

How to get a corporate recruiter to take your call seriously

Last week Emma from Sky mentioned on Twitter (you can read about why you should be using Twitter here) that she’d had 32 sales calls in one day (mostly from recruitment agencies).

What we've been doing with UKRecruiterJobs

Now, I'm not one for a lot of self publicity (well, I don't think I am).  However, I do want to mention what we've been up to with UKRecruiterJobs.co.uk since our launch a couple of months back.

 Creativepool's Guide to Online Recruitment

We have been referenced in the Creative Pool "Guide to online recruitment" so I felt it only polite to reciprocate.

Namyz - can it help find quality candidates?

Namyz is another fairly new social networking type-site.  It’s basically the recommendations bit from LinkedIn (although no doubt that’s a gross simplification).

Asking candidates for their six word professional life story?

I saw this on LinkedIn answers and I thought it worth sharing.

"Recently, I've started asking candidates to summarise their professional life in just six words. I'm interested in hearing about your six word professional life story."

Top 5 Reasons for using LinkedIn from a corporate recruiter perspective

Following on from last week's blog about Facebook, Emma at Sky asked for some feedback from her team on how her corporate recruiters use LinkedIn.  These are the top five reasons they gave:

Sir Alan Suggesting we Bin Women's CVs?

That Alan Sugar, he's hilariously un-pc sometimes (actually perhaps I'm un-pc for using the word hilarious there, sorry).  I'm not sure how he avoids the backlash your average boss would get from some of the comments he makes.
